In fairy tales they told us when we were little, there is always a prince who falls in love with a girl and, even if the family does not accept their union, after all the adversity, eventually marry and live happily ever after .. .
But the real world does not end just like that, especially the love story between, heir to the British throne, Edward VIII (son of George V) and a middle-class American divorcee Wallis Simpson.
At the time Edward was much appreciated as the heir to the throne, had a refined and elegant owe to him some goodies in men’s fashion, such as the introduction of the Blue-Midnighr Tuxedo and the replacement of the classic tuxedo shirt, a shirt with a collar reversible , shot pleated and double cuffs for cufflinks.
Sure, it was not perfect, and he happened to attend women already married, was in Summer 1934 Edward met Wallis Simpson, she was a divorced woman and they became lovers during a trip.
To their union was opposed by many, Edward was the heir to the throne and the British people would not appreciate an American divorcee, as his queen, not to mention the fact that as King, he would have been at the head of the Anglican church, and she being just divorced, in the eyes of God was still considered a married woman.
“I found it impossible to bear the heavy burden of responsibility and to carry out my duties as king as I would like, without the help and support of the woman I love”
With these words, on the evening of December 11, 1936, Edward VIII, the future king of England, he abdicated in favor of his brother Albert, who later became king under the title of George VI.
Then appointed Duke and Duchess of Windsor both emigrated, their life became a constant journey to find “happy island” away from the spotlight. In the summer of 1937 Edward and Wallis convogliarono wedding in France, in a very private ceremony.
They returned to England for rare occasions such as the funeral of King George VI of England, the whole street when Edward, in 1972, died of a throat cancer, he will be buried in the Royal Burial Ground at Frogmore with the title of Duke of Windsor.
When Wallis died in 1986 she was buried at Frogmore, next to her husband with the title of Duchess of Windsor.
Edoardo VIII e Wallis Simpson
