Bernardo Bertolucci

Bernardo Bertolucci was born in Parma in 1941. His father, Attilio Bertolucci , was a major Italian poet . In addition, his brother Joseph is playwright and film recording and cousin John is a film producer . Following in the footsteps , Bernardo enrolled in the Faculty of Arts, University La Sapienza of Rome, but soon left school and became an assistant for film by Pier Paolo Pasolini. Between 1956 and 1957 runs , with a reduced gauge camera , turn the first amateur short films , “The cable car” and “The death of the pig”. On the set of “Accattone” , a film by Pasolini in 1961 , Bertolucci worked as an assistant and meets Adriana Asti, his companion for many years. The following year he made his first feature film ” The Grim Reaper ” . Soon moves away from Pasolini to pursue his personal vision of cinema : an idea based on the individuality of people who are faced with changes in their world and what surrounds them , which may or may not want to find an answer to these changes . The underlying theme of all his films is this personal and political discourse around existential ambiguity , clearly visible in such films as ” The Double “, ” The Conformist ” and ” The Spider’s Stratagem ” . Bertolucci arrives at the worldwide success in 1972 with the controversial film “Last Tango in Paris” starring Marlon Brando, Maria Schneider , Jean -Pierre Leaud and Massimo Girotti . The film was called scandalous because it was intended sex as the only possible response to the conformity of the world . In this film, and also in the following , the protagonists are being lost , adrift, whose only way out is the transgression . The distribution of this film in Italy was troubled : the film was seized and was withdrawn by the Supreme Court in January of 76 , after several appeals process the film was release from seizure in 1987. The director was convicted of an offense to common decency . His other major film was “Novecento”, released in 1976 , tells the peasant struggles Emilian the early years of the 900 and uses an international cast : Robert De Niro , Gérard Depardieu , Donald Sutherland, Burt Lancaster, Stefania Sandrelli and Alida Valli. His consecration Olympus of world records comes in 1987 with output kollosal “The Last Emperor” . The film won nine Academy Awards , including best film and best director . In these years he worked mainly abroad with international productions : in 1990 in Morocco with “The Sheltering Sky” and 93 is in Nepal for “Little Buddha” . The return to Europe also marks a return to more intimating issues such as the 1996 film ” Stealing Beauty”. In 2003 he released “The Dreamers” in which he describes the political passions and sexual revolutions of a pair of brothers in Paris in 1968. The last film work of the Master is “You and I”, a film released in 2012 and a novel by Niccolo Ammaniti . Bertolucci wrote the screenplays of his films and those of others. In 2007 Bertolucci receives the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival in 2011 and the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival career . In these days we have seen busy as president of the jury of the 70th Venice Film Festival.

Bernardo Bertolucci nasce a Parma nel 1941. Il padre, Attilio Bertolucci, era un importante poeta italiano. Inoltre, il fratello Giuseppe è autore teatrale e registra cinematografico ed il cugino Giovanni è un produttore cinematografico. Seguendo le orme, Bernardo si iscrive alla Facoltà di Lettere dell’Università La Sapienza di Roma, ma poco dopo lascia gli studi per il cinema e diventa assistente di Pier Paolo Pasolini. Tra il 1956 e 1957 gira, con una camera a passo ridotto, gira i primi cortometraggi amatoriali, “La teleferica” e “La morte del maiale”. Sul set di “Accattone”, film di Pasolini del 1961, Bertolucci lavora come assistente ed incontra Adriana Asti, sua compagna per molti anni. L’anno successivo realizza il suo primo lungometraggio “La commare secca”. Presto si allontana da Pasolini per inseguire la sua personale idea di cinema: un’idea basata sull’individualità di persone che si trovano davanti a cambiamenti del loro mondo e di quello che li circonda, senza che possano o vogliano trovare una risposta a questi mutamenti. Il filo conduttore di tutti i suoi film è questo personale discorso attorno all’ambiguità esistenziale e politica, ben visibile in film come “Il sosia”, “Il conformista” e “strategia del ragno”. Bertolucci arriva al successo mondiale nel 1972 con il film-scandalo “Ultimo tango a Parigi” interpretato da Marlon Brando, Maria Schneider, Jean-Pierre Leaud e Massimo Girotti. Il film fu definito scandaloso perché si proponeva il sesso come l’unica risposta possibile al conformismo del mondo. In questo film, e anche nei successivi, i protagonisti sono essere persi, alla deriva, la cui unica via di uscita è la trasgressione. La distribuzione di questo film in Italia fu tormentata: la pellicola fu sequestrata e venne ritirata dalla Cassazione nel gennaio del 76, dopo vari processi d’appello la pellicola venne dissequestrata nel 1987. Il regista fu condannato per  offesa al comune senso del pudore. Altro suo importante film fu “Novecento”, uscito nel 1976, racconta le lotte contadine emiliane dai primi anni del ‘900 e si avvale un cast internazionale: Robert De Niro, Gérard Depardieu, Donald Sutherland, Burt Lancaster, Stefania Sandrelli e Alida Valli. La sua consacrazione nell’olimpo dei registri mondiali arriva nel 1987 con uscita  del kollosal “L’ultimo imperatore”. Il film si aggiudica nove premi Oscar, tra cui miglior film e migliore regia. In questi anni lavora soprattutto all’estero con produzioni internazionali: nel 1990 è in Marocco con “Il tè nel deserto” e nel 93 è in Nepal per “Piccolo Buddha”. Il ritorno in Europa segna anche un ritorno a  tematiche più intimistiche come il film del 1996 “Io ballo da sola”. Nel 2003 esce “The Dreamers” in cui racconta le passioni politiche e rivoluzioni sessuali di un coppia di fratelli nella Parigi del 1968. L’ultimo lavoro cinematografico del Maestro è “Io e te”, film uscito nel 2012 e trasposizione del romanzo di Niccolò Ammaniti. Bertolucci ha scritto le sceneggiature dei suoi film e per quelli di altri. Nel 2007 Bertolucci riceve il Leone d’Oro alla carriera durante il Festival di Venezia e nel 2011 la Palma d’Oro alla carriera al Festival di Cannes. In Questi giorni l’abbiamo visto impegnato come presidente di giuria del 70° Festival del Cinema di Venezia.
